The long-anticipated recording of Kile Smith's VESPERS with Piffaro and The Crossing is available now at piffaro.org. This work, written by Kile Smith and commissioned for Piffaro, was such a success in concert, that we just had to make the recording! You asked for it. Here it is!! Purchase your copy from Piffaro's web site.Last summer, music critic David Patrick Stearns stopped in on one of our recording sessions for a sneak peak. Listen to his interview on WRTI's Creatively Speaking. Watch a video about the recording, courtesy of WRTI.org, on Piffaro's Facebook page.

11 members met to play...Joan, Paula, Len and Dody, Janice, Ray, Molly, Sarah, John, Hiroko and Charles.
We used our usual warm-up/ intonation study to get going, and then returned to two pieces from November's material: Regnart's Nach Meine Lieb Ivo de Vento's Die Weiber mit den Flohen
After that we played through the set of Monteverdi pieces that were handed out in December, but which we had not played that month. Finally we returned to the Gabrieli Sonata Pian e Forte which we worked on in December.
As part of the month's business Sarah asked members to sign up and pay for books we talked about working from. Everyone has ordered either the Bernstein 5 voice, or the 4 voice, volume named on our earlier email. The copies will be ordered and we hope to have them to hand out next month at the playing session. We resolved to use the books as a stable part of each meeting, and I will provide additional material which I hope to be able to send out ahead of time if we can get it better timed and organized than we did in December.
We talked about using the material from each month over again with the goal of being able to play from it at performances. The hope is that we will play at least one public performance in March to celebrate Play the Recorder month.
In February we will play the Monteverdi and Gabrieli material again, and add numbers 6 and 11 from the Bernstein 5 voice book. There may be other pieces either old or new, so plan to bring your binder full of the year's material to date, and the Bernstein books if you already have them. Players who were absent are urged to remember to bring previously presented material each month, and to keep playing it, so we have something to build on.
We also decided to hold one additional Playing Session on the 3rd Saturday in June at the usual time and place, and to bring a sandwich/potluck-dessert lunch to share after playing. You are all encouraged to get together in small sub groups before then to prepare a duet/trio/etc to share at that meeting in an informal concert.

Hi everyone, We've got a lot to think and talk about. This will be Joanne's final meeting with us. She'll continue with PRS meetings, but will be leaving the Board after many years of faithful and wonderful service. Thank you, Joanne..
It will be Vince's first meeting. After many informal requests for someone to take over, Vince was the one who finally accepted the challenge and we all unanimously applaud him for it We thank him for being willing to step in and learn as he goes.
I'm starting to pull the agenda together, so let me know what you're thinking we should include.
We'll meet at Joanne's House
Monday March 5th at 8 pm.
Thanks. Dody |

The performing group of the Philadelphia Recorder Society consists of 7 recorderists: Joanne Ford, Hiroko Manabe, Vincent Hurtubise, Joan Rosen, Linda Blowney, Sarah West and Dody Magaziner. December 9th they played for the Awbury Arboretum's Annual Plant and Wreath Sale in the Cope House at the Arboretum December 13th they ventured to Center City and Played the Lunch Hour at The Bourse. Music included Holiday Carols from the 14th century thru to such newies as I'll Be Home for Xmas and Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree. Percussion was used to good effect on several pieces. Linda Blowney, doubling as vocalist, added spice and zest and beauty to many of the carols...well and not so well known..
Piffaro's Xmas in Mexico concerts, Dec 15, 16 and 17 in Center City, Chestnut Hill and Wilmington were stunning, thrilling experiences. My favorite venue for viewing and listening was up in the choir loft at the Presbyterian Church in Chestnut Hill. Piffaro was augmented by extra trumpeteers, and was joined by the Philadelpia Choral Arts Society, a choir of 80 voices. From the choir loft everything was crystal clear. This was true whether the full choir and all of Piffaro were playing, or as in many cases, a quartet of voices accompanied by lute and harp was playing. The music was exquisite, melodic, harmonically full and soul stirring. It was a remarkable, and memorable evening. Don't you wish you'd been there????
Back to the Philadelphia Recorder Society's performing group. They will continue rehearsing thru Jan and Feb in preparation for performing for Play the Recorder Month in March. A return trip to The Bourse is planned, and maybe to a Borders Store as well.
Now let's give Piffaro more space. Their February concert, Sweet Pipes will include a young recorder player, winner of the ongoing nationwide competition. The five finalists for this competition are from CA MN and Washington DC. The final play off will be held at the Germantown Settlement School on Jan 20 at 7:30, and you are invited. HOWEVER.......we are looking for donors. People willing to donate frequent flyer air miles to help in the transportation of these talented young folke. So if you have frequent flyer miles you are willing to part with, please contact Dody Magaziner dody18@webtv.net 215 886 2241 and we'll work out the details. Thank you very much. And, we'll look for you on Jan 20th at Germantown Settlement, and at the Sweet Pipes: The Art of the Recorder concert Feb 23 at St Marks, 1625 Locust Feb 24 Presb Church of Chestnut Hill 8825 Germantwon Ave. for tickets and info: www.piffaro.com |
