The performing group of the Philadelphia Recorder Society consists of 7 recorderists: Joanne Ford, Hiroko Manabe, Vincent Hurtubise, Joan Rosen, Linda Blowney, Sarah West and Dody Magaziner. December 9th they played for the Awbury Arboretum's Annual Plant and Wreath Sale in the Cope House at the Arboretum December 13th they ventured to Center City and Played the Lunch Hour at The Bourse. Music included Holiday Carols from the 14th century thru to such newies as I'll Be Home for Xmas and Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree. Percussion was used to good effect on several pieces. Linda Blowney, doubling as vocalist, added spice and zest and beauty to many of the carols...well and not so well known..
Piffaro's Xmas in Mexico concerts, Dec 15, 16 and 17 in Center City, Chestnut Hill and Wilmington were stunning, thrilling experiences. My favorite venue for viewing and listening was up in the choir loft at the Presbyterian Church in Chestnut Hill. Piffaro was augmented by extra trumpeteers, and was joined by the Philadelpia Choral Arts Society, a choir of 80 voices. From the choir loft everything was crystal clear. This was true whether the full choir and all of Piffaro were playing, or as in many cases, a quartet of voices accompanied by lute and harp was playing. The music was exquisite, melodic, harmonically full and soul stirring. It was a remarkable, and memorable evening. Don't you wish you'd been there????
Back to the Philadelphia Recorder Society's performing group. They will continue rehearsing thru Jan and Feb in preparation for performing for Play the Recorder Month in March. A return trip to The Bourse is planned, and maybe to a Borders Store as well.
Now let's give Piffaro more space. Their February concert,
